Re: Combining CPC-classes & keywords

Hello Lennart, there were a couple of brackets missing in your WHERE clause. SELECT DISTINCT tls201_appln.docdb_family_id, earliest_filing_year, tls206_person.person_ctry_code, CPC.CPCgrouped FROM tls201_appln JOIN TLS203_APPLN_ABSTR ON tls201_appln.appln_id = TLS203_APPLN_ABSTR.appln_id JOIN tls207...

Re: Problem: CPC-classes, applicants & DOCDB families

Hello Lennart, your analysis is correct; family members can have different spellings in the applicant name, the number of applicants can be different (that is why we took MAX); it could in principle even be different companies, and also the presence of a country code will lead to "different persons"...

Re: Problem: CPC-classes, applicants & DOCDB families

1) If you remove the "and (invt_seq_nr = 0)", you will get all the applicants back. It basically excludes many of the "natural persons" from the applicant list, namely the ones that are applicants. 2) CPC codes can be assigned by multiple offices and that can create duplicates. De-duplicating is ver...

Re: Problem: CPC-classes, applicants & DOCDB families

I adapted the query; PATSTAT Online is a bit particular about using renaming columns in tables.

Re: Problem: CPC-classes, applicants & DOCDB families

Hello Lennart, I took the freedom to correct the cpc codes in your query, the blanks should be added like this 'Y04S 30/14' and not 'Y04S30 /14' Ideally you would have access to a full PATSTAT data base instead of PATSTAT Online. That would allow you to create intermediate tables that contain data a...

Re: Forward citations and coverage

Hello Alexis, On 1) your query looks fine. When I do such counts, I would take just the first 2 applications, and manually check if the forward citations are effectively counted as you want them. On 2) coverage of the citation information is documented in the REFI publication which you can find at t...

Re: Problem: CPC-classes, applicants & DOCDB families

Hello Lennart, there is a small typo in your query; CPC codes need to have 8 characters before the / . This means that one has to add "spaces" to make it 8 characters. See query below, I also used the STRING_AGG function and a GROUP BY to reduce the number of rows, and de_duplicate the CPC codes. Bu...

Re: the first application of each DOCDB_FAMILY_ID

Hello Darwin, For the majority of the DocDB families, the "earliest_appln_id" will refer to one and the same application for all family members. In the complete PATSTAT database (2020a) there are 185.919 out of 76.458.745 (0.2%) DocDB families that have more then 1 "earliest_appln_id" in the family....

Re: % public vs private firms

Hello Thanos, PATSTAT does not contain information on whether a company is public or private. The PSN_SECTOR allows you the sort already companies from other applicants. You could probably make some kind of analysis on legal entity extensions in the applicant name that indicate whether that company ...

Re: [Help] Querying the number of patents with Chinese inventor as the first inventor

Hello Edwardsj, the answer is straightforward, from 2010 onwards, we do not receive applicant country codes for applications filed in China. There is not much we can do about this, you might simply exclude applications filed in China from your data (at least the utility models), and maybe only take ...
