Re: Earliest Priority Date
Best answered by the EPO, but here's my assumption. Priority patent follows DOCDB, i.e. "Means that most probably the applications share exactly the same priorities (Paris Convention or technical relation) as in table TLS204_PRIOR_APPLN and TLS205_TECH_REL and tls216_APPLN_CONTN." Note TLS...

Re: Linking Patstat to Compustat and/or CRSP?
By company name (`conm` or `conml` in Compustat). However, Compustat is consolidated, PATSTAT is not. In other words, Compustat only contains ultimate parents/mothers but there is nothing that says that subsidiaries/daughters can not apply for patents. In fact, some companies may even have a subsidi...

Re: Count Company's number of patent applications
Could you post one example? You have Firm A acquiring Firm B in 2005, and then you want all patents of Firm A and B in 2005 and beyond? This basically is a "Count all applications by Firm X" problem, except that in your case your Firm X is a more complex temporal structure with several ent...

Re: can I use the applicant's origin in research?
Try this: SELECT * FROM `tls201_appln` INNER JOIN `tls207_pers_appln` ON `tls201_appln`.`appln_id` = `tls207_pers_appln`.`appln_id` INNER JOIN `tls206_person` ON `tls207_pers_appln`.`person_id` = `tls207_pers_appln`.`person_id` WHERE `appln_auth`="CN" AND `tls207_pers_appln`.`applt_seq_nr`...

Re: counting documents in CPC groups
Be careful with: data availability: do all patents have CPC codes? it wasn't true for IPC, I don't know what's the status for CPC. whole counts vs fractional counts: patents tend to have more than one patent class. Do you count each class as 1 or as 1/(number of classes)? double counting: not really...

Re: can I use the applicant's origin in research?
There are ways to find the missing data.
For a recent and very good example, see the "worldwide count of priority patents" paper by Rassenfosse et al.

See http://forums.epo.org/epo-worldwide-pat ... c2508.html
But the easiest way is to simply re-import the data.

Re: Backward and forward citations; Problems with syntax
I prefer to split these kind of queries into subqueries, using intermediate tables. I'm using PATSTAT October 2013 btw. Step 1: Finding all patent by Novartis. Which Novartis? There are so many... Re: Searching for Patents Based on Applicant Country of Orig
These guys have developed an algorithm to replenish missing data:
http://gder.phpnet.org/rassenfosse//pap ... tents.html
The general approach is to use patent families, and use the country of patent office if nothing else works.
