ARIPO/African Patents - Designated States?

Post by zecon » Sun May 28, 2023 4:24 pm

Hi all,

I'm extracting information on patents in Africa using Patstat, Spring version 2018. It seems that tls231 does not have information on designated states from the ARIPO--is this true? Where else can I get as much information as possible on patents from ARIPO (AP) or other African countries in the PATSTAT database?

Thanks!

Hello Zecon,
patents that have been filed ARIPO have the WIPO ST.3 code AP. Using a condition such as appln_auth = 'AP' will retrieve patents filed at ARIPO.
There aren't that many, see in espacenet: https://worldwide.espacenet.com/patent/ ... 20%22AP%22

EP patents can not designate ARIPO, only member states or validation states can be designated. PCT applications (WO) can designate ARIPO or ARIPO member states, but it seems that the information is not (longer) available in coded form in PATSTAT or INPADOC. The only available information seems to be the printed PDF document (available in ESPACENET) or WIPO register.
