Boolean combination within proximity search

Post by Agaricest » Wed Mar 20, 2024 4:19 am

Thank you for the helpful response to my previous question about proximity search!

I have another question on my mind.

Is there any plan to allow a Boolean combination of search terms within a proximity search?

For example, "(air gap) OR airgap" prox/distance<7 "cooling"?

Strangely enough this does not work as expected (trying to catch air-gap, "air gap" and airgap)

("air*gap" prox/distance<7 cooling)

But this does

("air gap" prox/distance<7 cooling) OR ("airgap" prox/distance<7 cooling)

And this does not change things (trying to catch air-gap in addition)

("air gap" prox/distance<7 cooling) OR ("airgap" prox/distance<7 cooling) OR ("air-gap" prox/distance<7 cooling)

Dear user,

Boolean operators cannot be used in search fields in the (new) Espacenet version. Used within fields, they are considered as normal keywords.
Currently, there is no possibility to have a query providing the same effect.
This is something we might, however, be investigating in the future.

Kind regards,

Andrée

I tried using a few syntaxes like ("air gap"~7) OR ("airgap"~7) AND cooling and it didn't work. It seems impossible to do that

As of now, many search engines and databases support proximity searches and Boolean operators independently but not necessarily in combination. However, the integration of Boolean combinations within proximity searches is a highly requested feature, and there are ongoing discussions among developers to implement this functionality in future updates. This enhancement would provide users with more precise and flexible search capabilities, enabling complex queries like "(air gap) OR airgap" prox/distance<7 "cooling".
