Classification Search Features

Post by Bill_Hanson » Tue Oct 13, 2020 7:49 am

Please let me know if and where the following are available in new Espacenet:
1. Searching in an exact CPC group (i.e. not "low").
2. Copying CPC to search form.

Thank you for your great suggestion to put these functionalities in new Espacenet. We have included it for evaluation and prioritisation into our change management process and hope that we can improve the situation in the future.
Kind regards

Dear user,

We would also like to explain to you that the functionalities, which you mentioned, are indeed not present in the classification search area anymore as proposed in classic Espacenet, but that you can nevertheless achieve the same functionalities in the following way:

1. With regards to the use of /exact, you can actually search "exactly" for a classification symbol at sub-group level in Smart search or Advanced search, as long as you don't add /low at the end of the symbol.
As an example run today:
  • cpc=H01S3/03 gave 870 results and searched "exactly" for this symbol and not any sub-level.
  • cpc=H01S3/03/low gave 5214 results, because it also searched for all sub-levels (H01S3/0305, H01S3/031, H01S3/035, etc.).
2. With regards to the possibility to copy CPC classification symbols in the search form, you will obtain the same by ticking boxes on the wished classification symbol(s) in the classification search area and clicking on the the button "Find patents". The symbol(s) will then be copied in the search forms (Smart search and Advanced search at the same time, since they are now synchronised in new Espacenet). Once the symbol(s) have been copied in the search forms, you can remove "/low" in case you wish to search "exactly" for a symbol at sub-group level. It is, however, true, that new Espacenet does not save the selected classification symbol(s) in the classification search area for a later use anymore.

You might also be interested to know that it is also possible to select one or more classification symbols (CPC or IPC) in the Filters area and click on the button "+ query" to have the selected classification symbols added in the search forms. The selected symbols are then added to the existing query, combining the symbols with the rest of the query with the "AND" operator.

Once run, all queries can be retrieved again in "My Espacenet - My queries" for further later uses.

We hope that these explanations might be useful to you. Don't hesitate to come back to us if you have any further questions.
Kind regards
