East meets West 2018 forum afterglow!

Post by EPO / Asia Info » Mon Jun 11, 2018 8:37 am

Dear users,

We are happy to share with you that the EPO’s annual East meets West forum on patent information once again attracted more than 100 participants: searchers, patent attorneys, scientists and delegates from different patent offices.

The experts from the Asian patent offices discussed the role that AI and other new technologies might play in patent information search and retrieval in the near future. The topic of Artificial Intelligence was nicely complemented with presentations on how – when it comes to customer-oriented services - personal contact and human intuition cannot be completely replaced by machines.

One of the highlights of the conference was the Country focus session where - for the first time in the history of the East meets West event -, the Commissioner of the South African Patent Office (CIPC), Mr Rory Voller, gave a comprehensive overview of the local patent system and upcoming changes in the law.

The delegates from Russia, India and Iran brought updates from their jurisdictions: The audience could learn about Rospatent’s new publication system, China's "Belt and Road Initiative" and latest developments in science and technology in Iran. Also this year, representatives from Arabic countries actively shared recent news from the ARABPAT project.

All material from the conference, including a photo gallery with some impressions, is available online at www.epo.org/emw . A detailed review article about the event will be published in the next issue of the EPO’s Patent Information News https://www.epo.org/service-support/pub ... d=117#tab3(issue 02/2018).

On the day before the conference, the Patent Documentation Group https://www.p-d-g.org/portal/fep/en/dt.jsp (PDG) hosted again the workshop "What the user community needs –towards effective collaboration between East and West" . The presentation containing the feedback obtained from the Asian offices and the outcome of the discussion with the PDG can be viewed here https://www.epo.org/learning-events/eve ... rs.html#a1.

The next East meets West forum on Asian patent information will take place on 10 and 11 April 2019 - of course in the beautiful city of Vienna, Austria. We are already in the process of discussing relevant topics, speakers and experts for next year’s event.

In case there is any particular topic in the area of Asian patent information which you would like us to address at next year’s event, feel free to submit your suggestions in this discussion forum or contact us at asiainfo@epo.org

With kind regards,

Your Asian Patent Information Services Team
