Guide on how to use legal status data TLS221_INPADOC_PRS

Post by mkracker » Tue Oct 08, 2013 12:51 pm

Dear PATSTAT users,

Admittedly, legal status information is neither easy to understand nor to apply. The TLS221 table contains almost 4000 different legal event codes (LEC) that tag each procedural step in the life of a patent. The reason why the code count is so high is due to the fact that each country has different event codes (data from around 50 countries are available in the EPO's repository) and when amendments of any kind are introduced, events and codes are subject to change.

This diversity of these of codes can make statistical analysis quite complex, e.g. when analyzing several countries. An aprroach to simplify the task is to group the codes into fewer and better manageable legal event code groups (LECG).

To facilitate making better use of the INPADOC legal event data in table TLS221_INPADOC_PRS I have created the attached document . It contains 2 parts:
- Information provided on the EPO site about legal status codes and legal status data
- The description on how to process the codes and how to assign the LEC and LECG to the PATSTAT INPADOC legal event data. This step-by-step process is explained in detail. The SQL scripts (T-SQL for MS SQL Server) and auxiliary tables (e. g. tab separated csv files) are also included in the attachement. You need to have subscribed the EPO raw data product 14.24.1 ( i. e. have access to TLS221-INPADOC_PRS table) to run the scripts.

Your feedback is welcome.
