Is the data of espacenet and OPS the same ?

Post by ming » Thu Jul 25, 2019 2:29 am

Hi Hi:
I was wandering if the database of espacenet and OPS is the same?? Do they update in the same time ??

Because I use program to search in 「priority number」(CN201711343477) through OPS, I cannot find anything , but if I search in espacenet , I can find 1 result in the Worldwide database. Why ??

Thanks in advance. :D

Dear user,

OPS and Espacenet are both retrieving data from the same database.
What you see in Espacenet is enhanced with business rules in the background, whereas OPS is giving data only.

In the case that you mention, Espacenet indicates that there is a priority number CN201711343477, but it shows you the data corresponding to the document CN109902815 (A) published on 2019-06-18.

This specific priority document is not available in the database, therefore you will not find the document neither in Espacenet nor in OPS.

We will ask our colleagues if they can get the document from the Chinese office and load it into the database. This will take a few days.

Kind regards,
OPS support

Dear Ming,

Data in OPS and Espacenet is of course the same data, its coming from the same database. If something is available in Espacenet then it will also be in OPS since OPS is actually feeding Espacenet.

The only thing to pay attention to is that old Espacenet uses EPODOC format so if you copy a number from Espacenet then make sure to use epodoc format in your URL request too. New Espacenet BETA is using docdb format.

But if you use Biblio search like here below you can get the record without worrying about number format:

.../rest-services/published-data/search/biblio/?q=pr%3DCN201711343477

Dear Vesna ..
Thanks for your reply, here are some questions hope you can help...
1.What is the difference between EPODOC format and DOCDB format??

2..../rest-services/published-data/search/biblio/?q=pr%3DCN201711343477 what does that mean?
I use "http://ops.epo.org/3.2/rest-services/pu ... 1711343477" in IE URL, but it cannot work?

3.I queried OPS for pr=CN201711343477, I got 1 result (as bellows):
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?><?xml-stylesheet type="text/xsl" href="/3.2/style/exchange.xsl"?>
<ops:world-patent-data xmlns="http://www.epo.org/exchange" xmlns:ops="http://ops.epo.org" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">
<ops:biblio-search total-result-count="1">
<ops:query syntax="CQL">pr = CN201711343477</ops:query>
<ops:range begin="1" end="25"/>
<ops:search-result>
<exchange-documents>
<exchange-document system="ops.epo.org" family-id="66819989" country="CN" doc-number="109902815" kind="A">
[size]
But I queried Espacenet for pr=CN201711343477, I got 9 results , why is it different ??
CN109902810 (A) CN109902811 (A) CN109902812 (A) CN109902813 (A) CN109902814 (A) CN109902816 (A) CN109902817 (A) WO2019114649 (A1) CN109902815 (A)

Thanks

As said, OPS feeds Espacenet so you cannot have difference with what the services gives you in a query.

In Espacent and in OPS you only get one result, but Espacenet offers you also simple patent family view (aka “Also published as”) in basic biblio and for the same family picture in OPS you have to use another constituent which means different URL:

.../rest-services/published-data/priority/docdb/CN201711343477/equivalents or
.../rest-services/published-data/priority/docdb/CN201711343477/equivalents/biblio

This query will give you 9 simple family members, just like Espacenet does.

Please remember that Espacenet is a search tool and OPS is only a web service access to the raw data, without any business rules that would be able to combine different data as we can do in Espacenet.

As far as difference between DOCDB and Epodoc, look at older posts, that is pretty regular question. The distinction is only important in proper number search (like mine is, for eqvivalents) and not in a CQL search (the kind of search you were doing).

Vesna

https://ops.epo.org/3.2/rest-services/p ... nts/biblio

The first url I got 1 result only,the second url I got 9 result, I am confused why these two url get different results?? They have the same family ID (66819989),but different results??

Hi,

In a first case you were searching for documents that have specific CN priority in common and you've got 1 result.
In a second case you were searching for simple patent family of document with priority CN and for biblio of those family members and there you got all together 9 publications (doc you’ve searched for + 8 members).

Both searches gave you proper results.

What is probably confusing here is that our families (every database can have their own family rules, these are our rules what I am about to explain) are not only built on assumption that documents must have same all or some priorities in common, but that in addition to that there are exception that are just as important as original priority rule when family picture in our databases is concerned.

In DOCDB simple family (aka “Also published as” in Espacenet or “equivalents” in OPS) we also consider continuations and divisions simple family members because they cover the same technical content as the parent application. Continuations and divisions will always be in a patent family with the parent application, regardless of the priorities that they claim.

A simple patent family is a collection of patent documents that are considered to cover a single invention. The technical content covered by the applications is considered to be identical and this is why you will sometime find applications that are in the same family although priorities are not the same at all. I would suggest you have a look at our Patent families pages form more information: https://www.epo.org/searching-for-paten ... ilies.html

If you are interested in searching simple families, then please always use equivalents constituent in OPS and look at “Also published as” list of you results if you are using Classic Espacenet.
