Linking Patstat to Compustat and/or CRSP?

Here you can post your opinions, ask questions and share experiences on the PATSTAT product line. Please always indicate the PATSTAT edition (e.g. 2015 Autumn Edition) and the database (e.g. PATSTAT Online, MySQL, MS SQL Server, ...) you are using.

Linking Patstat to Compustat and/or CRSP?

Post by Chris Mihokovich » Mon Nov 17, 2014 6:01 pm

Do you have any insight on how I can link an extraction of Patstat data with Compustat and/or CRSP? I am trying to link a database to the Compustat or CRSP database systems.

By company name (`conm` or `conml` in Compustat). However, Compustat is consolidated, PATSTAT is not. In other words, Compustat only contains ultimate parents/mothers but there is nothing that says that subsidiaries/daughters can not apply for patents. In fact, some companies may even have a subsidiary specifically for doing R&D and applying for patents.

You could use NBER, but NBER only has information for Compustat North America, and only up to 2006.
