Missing patents from ops REST vs worldwide.espacenet.

Post by lexmachina » Tue May 20, 2014 8:03 pm

Hi,

Can anyone explain why patent information with CPC codes is available from the worldwide.espacenet patent search web site yet missing from the OPS biblio REST service (3.1(slash)rest-services(slash)published-data(slash)publication(slash)epodoc)? In particular I noticed that all Design and Reissue US patents are not in the OPS service.

I can't include urls due to the forum spam filter, but search for D621068, D782221, D652407, etc. on
both and you should see what I'm referring to.

Thanks for your help.

Dear user,

Documents you've mentioned are available in OPS:
http://ops.epo.org/3.1/rest-services/pu ... 11F/biblio
http://ops.epo.org/3.1/rest-services/pu ... 22F/biblio
or
http://ops.epo.org/3.1/rest-services/pu ... 07S/biblio

And CPC is also available as you can see in the record itself.

Kind regards,

Thanks for the follow up.

Using the 3 example patents in my original post (D621068, D782221, D652407) I was only able to find information for a single patent D621068 and that was using your .../application/... url vs. the .../publication/... url that I was using previously. That's progress, but I'm still curious as to why there is a discrepancy.

It would appear from your reply that no difference in availability of patent information is to be expected, yet apparently that is what I'm seeing. Any idea why?

Insights appreciated.

As far as I see, you can get results for two out of three numbers you gave me, no matter if you use epodoc or docdb format. For the first one I only gave you url for application query but publication works as well as you see here:
http://ops.epo.org/3.1/rest-services/p ... 68S/biblio

Your second publication I am not able to retrieve anywhere, not in OPS or in Espacent. Can you check if your number is really correct?

As far as biblio info, OPS and Espacenet have same coverage since OPS is actually feeding Espacenet.

The problem may be due to the different ways in which Espacenet and OPS handle publication numbers. Espacenet is much more lenient and searching for just D621068 brings up the right document. OPS expects the proper publication number either in epodoc (USD621068S) or docdb (US.D621068.S1) format. If the right format is used, then OPS should return the expected data.

Well, it's not exactly like that
- Smart search in Espacenet is same function as search in Publication service in OPS.

So, you can theoretically search only D621068 in both and get same result in both services:
http://ops.epo.org/3.1/rest-services/pu ... ?q=D621068
http://worldwide.espacenet.com/searchRe ... acenet.com

- The other thing that I did mention in the past is that Smart search does support numbers but the main function of this CQL search is to search keywords and combined search profiles. I would never recommend searching for numbers in a Smart search in Espacenet or OPS, there are other filed dedicated to that in both systems. Smart search with numbers would make sense if you are trying to find specific document number anywhere in a biblio and not when you are looking for specific publication with specific document number.

But searching any patent number without country or kind code is not a good idea, since those two represent essential part of every document number and can lead to wrong results if you don't pay attention or don't include them.

As mentioned before, as far as biblio goes OPS and Espacenet have same content since OPS is actually a web system behind OPS. Difference only starts when you want to load full text, because OPS supports only few collections and Espacenet gives you more. This is also not the only difference, but the most important one.

But I do agree with what you say on using proper format in OPS, but that applies for number search filed and not for CQL "Search".

Espacenet is a proper functional database and OPS is a raw data web service.

As a follow up:

I was unaware of the use of a 'kind' identifier for Design (S) and Reissue (E) patents and I want to thank all responders for their help in clarifying that for me.
