New Espacenet released into production on 19 November 2019

Post by Patent Information Marketing » Tue Nov 19, 2019 3:58 pm

The European Patent Office (EPO) has today released the new Espacenet, a substantially revised and improved version of the Office's patent information search tool. New Espacenet's state-of-the-art features and enhanced functionality will make it even easier for users to conduct patent searches and access over 110 million patent documents from all over the world free-of-charge.
Please find here the main changes compared to classic Espacenet and the release notes.

I use the site primarily to get information about applications or patents for which I already know the number. For this, the new Espacenet is not improved; it's been wrecked. Too many panes cramming too much information into too little space. I can't use the up and down arrow keys to scroll through the patent family pane. And now it is functionally impossible to get a PDF of the issued European patent in a family - links to it are either not responsive or lead back to underlying applications. If you had set out to compromise the functionality of the site, mission accomplished.

Dear user,
Taking your user feedback into account, we are trying to improve the browsing experience when only showing one document. In the next release you may see no result list on the left hand side, in case your search returns only one result, which will give you more space for the specific document.

We have implemented some key stroke navigations:
You will navigate the result list with arrow down and arrow up or with n for next document and p for previous document. In case you want to view different parts of the document you may use simply type 1 for bibliographic data, 2 for description etc.

The downloadable content depends on which tab you selected in the document view.
You may download the pdf of the original document by clicking on the three dot menu in the upper right corner of the document view, when you select either Bibliographic data, Drawings or Original document tab.

Links are clickable whenever possible. Please be aware that by clicking on a bold publication number of a family member in the bibliographic data tab you will navigate to this document. Please right click (or touch and hold on mobile devices) in case you want to open it in a different tab or window. Please be aware that clicking on the publication number of he current document shown in the bibliographic data tab will have no effect, since it is already displayed: It is therefore displayed in a grey font. Please right click on it in case you want it to open up in your browser in a different tab or window.

Hopefully you will find the new interface soon as intuitive as the classic one, once you got used to it.
Kind regards

I do not see how it is possible with the new Espacenet to retrieve and download the documents from the European Patent Resister, in particular the correspondence between the Office and the Applicant . . . the Examination Reports; amendments and other responses by Applicants; etc. This was one of the main features I used in the old Espacenet, with the lovely "All Documents" tab.

Why was this very valuable feature removed? IMO, it is a giant step backwards.

Dear user,

There might be a misunderstanding here. The features you describe refer to the European Patent Register which still exists and which we haven't touched in the frame of rolling out new Espacenet. It can still be accessed at epo.org/register with all the features you described including the "All documents" tab.

The recently released new Espacenet will, in the future, replace our classic Espacenet which will run in parallel for the foreseeable future. Thus, at the moment, no application has disappeared but a new and modern application is offered with extended functionality.
Kind regards

Please keep the "Classic Espacenet" in operation, and perhaps consider reinstating this as the default site. I do many searches on Espacenet, and find the old site much better than the new one.

Dear users,
New Espacenet is now the default platform. We would like to encourage you to familiarise yourself with this interface, which offers many new features like statistical analyses, better advanced search and more complete searching in the full text (e.g. searching also bulk translated texts). Please find more information in the Pocket guide and the Changes in Espacenet document.
Kind regards
