Patent Landscape Chart Anomaly

Post by Phil Sheppard » Thu May 26, 2022 11:05 am

Hello - My search produced 25 results, restricted to patent families only. The chart showing the results by earliest priority date has the correct cumulative number by the final date - 25. The chart showing the results by publication date has a much higher cumulative figure of 46. Why is this? The only reason I can think of is that the publications chart is including the publications of members of the patent family in different jurisdictions. If so, this should be made clear!

The URL to my results is below.

Dear user,

You are completely right. We have also discovered this recently and this will be corrected in the next release.

Kind regards,

Andrée

Hello,
It is likely that the chart showing the results by publication date is including the publications of members of the patent family in different jurisdictions, as well as any continuation or divisional patents that may have been filed. These continuation or divisional patents may have been filed after the initial patent application and would therefore have a later publication date, resulting in a higher cumulative total. It is important to note that the chart should be clearly labeled and the criteria for inclusion should be clearly defined to avoid confusion.

Hello,

When the filter Family/Publication toggle is on "Publication", the chart displayed for the "Publication date" should only give the number per year of publications which have been published in that year and not of patent family members. The issue currently with the number of publications displayed in the Filter area is that the database structure does not always generate the expected number. In these cases, the number is, however, lower than expected and not the opposite. It is a known issue, which we are working on.

When the toggle is on "Family", the chart is displayed for the "Earliest publication date" and should give the number per year of families that have this "earliest" publication date within the family.

Should you find examples where these rules do not apply and a higher number of publications is displayed than expected, please send them to us and we will analyse them.
Kind regards
