PATSTAT 2021 Spring edition ready for download

Post by EPO / PATSTAT Support » Tue Apr 27, 2021 2:50 pm

Dear PATSTAT subscriber,

The 2021 Spring edition has been tested, found sound, and is now ready for download.
Do not hesitate to contact us in case you encounter problems when uploading the new data files.
In the documentation folder you will also find a document called
(256.8 KiB) Downloaded 143 times
which contains valuable information on how to get started loading the PATSTAT data files.
Questions regarding shipping, subscription, pricing, access passwords or invoicing can be sent directly to the EPO Customer Service Centre via .

The spread of the coronavirus and the current ongoing “third wave” has led to reinstated restrictions and has made it nearly impossible for colleagues and friends to physically meet. Video conferencing, virtual team meetings, home-working and e-conferencing have become the norm and many of us have now been homeworking for many months.
In line with the decision taken for the previous PATSTAT editions, we have decided to continue providing free access to PATSTAT Online for PATSTAT Global and Register customers until further notice. If you want to make use of this offer, kindly ask your users to send a short e-mail to and we will then provide access credentials to PATSTAT Online as soon as possible.

PATSTAT news - business as usual, no major changes.

In an ideal world, data would be clean, well-structured and not redundant. As this is often not the case when data originates from various sources, we have to impose a structure to bring order into the chaos.
Therefore the TLS214_NPL_PUBL layout has slightly changed; we have consolidated duplicates and created a MD5 hash based primary key using the NPL_BIBLIO attribute. This key is stored in the NPL_PUBLN_ID attribute. The XP-Number has been moved to a new attribute XP-NR. (On a sidenote: XP numbers can be used to call the NPL data in ESPACENET, something like this: link.)
To be consistent, we also had to change the domain of the attribute CITED_NPL_PUBLN_ID in table TLS212_CITATION.

The attribute FEE_COUNTRY is now also populated for event code VSFP (Validation State Fee Paid). In human language: granted EP applications can be “validated” in non EP-member states which accept a granted EP patent as being a valid patent. Currently this concerns Morocco (MA), Republic of Moldova (MD), Tunisia (TN) and Cambodia (KH). There are about 200 granted EP applications that have been validated in one of the validation states. This attribute allows you to see which patents have been validated in which country.

LAPSE_COUNTRY did not contain any information. This has now been corrected.

Additional resources
We should also like to take this opportunity to inform you about some additional sources of PATSTAT information: On the PATSTAT webpage ( you will find the “Documentation” and “Getting started” tabs with many useful documents and self-study material and sample queries.
EPO also hosts the PATSTAT forum; here is the link: patstat-product-line-28/ On this forum post you will find a useful visualisation on data coverage and completeness.
Tailor-made PATSTAT training on site is also possible against cost.
We also observed that more and more PATSTAT users are starting to use the “EP full-text data for text analytics”.
It is available for free, and more information can be found here: for-pate ... ytics.html

PATSTAT user day 2021
We have decided that there will be no “physical” PATSTAT user day in 2021.
However, if the community would support a virtual session, we could organise it and set it up via WEBEX.

We are however planning a special PATSTAT contribution during the “Summer school on Data and Algorithms for ST&I studies” taking place between 22-24 September.
This event, organised by KU-Leuven in cooperation with the EPO, will take place as a virtual happening and possibly also as a physical happening (in Thessaloniki-Greece or Leuven-Belgium) if “the situation allows it”.

Geert Boedt
