% public vs private firms

Post by Thanos » Thu May 14, 2020 6:47 pm

Hello
Does anyone know if there a statistic on the percentage of public companies that are quoted on PATSTAT? It does not have to be anythign too specific. so for example if there are 100m patent families on the datavase, is there a statistic that gives how many of them are from public ie listed on a public exchange vs private companies?
Many thanks!

Hello Thanos,
PATSTAT does not contain information on whether a company is public or private.
The PSN_SECTOR allows you the sort already companies from other applicants.
You could probably make some kind of analysis on legal entity extensions in the applicant name that indicate whether that company is public or private. Most stock exchanges have easy to use files of their listings, you could use a matching algorithm to find matches.
However you turn it, it will require a bit of data cleaning and data matching.
