"Publications meeting the search and filter criteria"

Post by Bradford » Thu Mar 12, 2020 3:30 pm

In new Espacenet this query:-

cl=G06N5/00 and pn=EPA2 and pd=2012

yields three results (EP2478456, EP2402892, EP2519843) but it is indicated that four publications meet the search and filter criteria.

My question is what is the fourth publication? Where is it in the families of the results?

Another example is the query:-

cl=G06N5/00 and pn=EPA1 and pd=2012

which yields five results and indicates that seven publications meet the search and filter criteria.

What are the sixth and seventh publications? Are they contained in the families (simple or INPADOC) of the five results?

Dear user,
Sorry for the delay in responding to this question which required some internal clarification. The meaning of "document" is actually a record in our database, which is unfortunately not one record per kind code. The kind codes are grouped together and some some data is aggregated. We actually group for EP's the A and the B kind codes, which means that we count "two different A's" as one document but "one A and one B" as two documents.

Explaining first your second search: cl=G06N5/00 and pn=EPA1 and pd=2012
The two EP applications: pn=EP2423851 or pn=EP2463173 have 2 results with 4 database documents, since both have A and B publications.
All others:cl=G06N5/00 and pn=EPA1 and pd=2012 not (pn=EP2423851 or pn=EP2463173)
have only A publications. One has two A's (EP2430568A1;EP2430568A4) but those count only as one entry in the data base as mentioned above.

Now to your first query:cl=G06N5/00 and pn=EPA2 and pd=2012

The patent pn=EP2478456A2 has an A but no B publication. Patent pn=EP2402892 creates two database documents since it contains A's and B’s. It is at first sight not understandable why pn= EP2519843A2 does not also get 2 documents, which would sum up to 5 documents (not 4!). The reason is that EP2519843B1 is not classified in the above requested classification but in G06N7/00, so that it does not fulfill the search criteria.

It is understandable that this is quite complex and that one has to know the details of the database design to understand it completely. We currently still show the number of documents, which can be helpful to understand, why a certain family was hit and what happens when additional filters are asserted.

Please be aware that the database design might change resulting in different numbers.
Kind regards

Dear user,
Thank you also for your question: It was very interesting and triggert some discussion on our database model and how we can improve Espacenet.
Kind regards
