Search for particular designated states

Post by KETNER_EW » Fri Jan 24, 2020 12:18 pm

Dear Madams and Sirs,

Is it possible to search in any of the EPO publicly available databases
for particular designated states that are designated for EP patents and EP patent applications.

I thank you in advance for your prompt reply.

With Best Regards,

Dear Ms Walland,
Both EPO's free of charge EP databases offer criteria that allow to search for applications where particular contracting, validation and/or extension states have been designated.
In the links below you will be able to access the databases and all relevant information to get familiar with them (eg. user manual).
EP Bulletin search

Kind regards

In addition to the above information:

According to the European Patent Convention, Article 79 :
All the Contracting States party to this Convention at the time of filing of the European patent application shall be deemed to be designated in the request for grant of a European patent.
The designation of a Contracting State may be subject to the payment of a designation fee.
The designation of a Contracting State may be withdrawn at any time up to the grant of the European patent.

In addition to the Contracting States, Validation and Extension States can also be designated.

In EP full-text search, a possible query could be:

PUD = 202001 and DCS = ES or PT

to retrieve EP documents published in January 2020 with ES or PT as designated contracting states.
Please note that, usually, EP A1 include all contracting states whereas EP B1 documents include the states for which fees have been paid.

Relevant criteria for extension and validation states are DXS and DVS.

Similar searches can be run in EP Bulletin search.

Best regards,
