Dear forum community,

As you may know, the EPO offers a special support service on Asian patent information and the Asian patent systems. Some of our team members are fluent in Chinese, Japanese or Korean languages. We offer a range of services which are free-of-charge, such as the information we provide on our virtual helpdesk on the EPO website (http://www.epo.org/asia). You can contact us for general assistance with accessing Asian patent information, for example:

• if you need help finding a particular Asian patent document

• if you want to check the legal status of an Asian patent application

• if you need assistance with your searches in official databases of Asian offices

• if you need an English machine translation of an Asian document

• if there is an Asian number format you cannot decipher

• if you would like to better understand the patent systems in Asian countries

Our “core” countries as are Japan, China and Korea. However, you can also contact us with questions on Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, India, ASEAN countries, or even the Arabic world.

This forum is a new space where you can post your questions to us, but you can also use it to share tips among each other and engage in a discussion on Asian patent information matters. We hope this tool will bring the worldwide user community with a special interest in Asia a bit closer together.

If you would like to get in touch with us, please send an e-mail to asiainfo@epo.org.
We look forward to hearing from you!

Hi,
I see on the espacenet that 'patent translate', only translates the patent details and abstract. I downloaded two patents but they are in Chinese. I conclude that there is no facility on espacenet to translate downloaded patent. Am I correct that I can request a free translation of these documents.
Thanks for your help

Dear user,

Thank you for your post and your questions.

Regarding your question on human translation please be informed that via the EPO’s Asian Patent Information Services you will be able to access a network of qualified translators specialising in various technical fields. Specifically, they offer high-quality human translations of patent and utility model documents from Japanese, Korean or Chinese into English or German. The service is however payable and the current prices are available here: http://www.epo.org/searching-for-patent ... .html#tab2.

To request a cost estimate, simply e-mail the document to be translated or the document number to asiainfo@epo.org and we usually reply within few hours.

Regarding the question on the Espacenet machine translation functionalities, please contact patentinformation@epo.org and if possible provide our colleagues with the publication or application number of the patent document which machine translation you need to obtain.

Thank you very much for your cooperation.

With best regards,

Asian Patent Information Services
