WHY DIFFERENT RESULTS IN NEW & CLASSIC ESPACENET

Post by GR_Espacenet1 » Tue Mar 10, 2020 8:40 am

Dear Sir/Madam,

In trying the following search criteria:

detection (method or system) (air?borne bacteria)

I get 5876 results in New espacenet and only 10 in the classic espacenet.

Could you please explain to me why such a difference?
Thank you very much.

Dear Ms Gaganatsou,

One of the most prominent differences is, that when you put in your expression in Smart search in classic Espacenet it will search the terms in the title and abstracts fields.

In contrast, in (new) Espacenet it will search in the full-text by default. You can check this by activating the Advancved search once you have carried out your search in Smart search where you can see for each field where the search been carried out. Changing this to searching in titles and abstracts via the dropdown menu above each of the fields will bring you down to 15 results (families) also in (new) Espacenet.

Once you start modifying your query in Advanced search you will also see the way that Smart search has interpreted your search as the field identifiers and Boolean operators will be added also in Smart search.

To look up further differences between classic and new Espacenet you might want to also look at the what-has-changed document.
Kind regards

Dear users,

In case you are also interested to know where the remaining difference of 5 additional documents in Espacenet compared to classic Espacenet come from: here is the answer.

For 3 of the 5 documents the term “detection” is not contained in the English but in the French title/abstract. In the worldwide bibliographic data collection of classic Espacenet, the titles and abstracts are, as a general rule, only searchable in English and these documents are, therefore, not found. In (new) Espacenet, however, the documents are found because the search is carried out in all three available languages per default.

For the two remaining documents the terms "*airborne" and "detection", respectively, are contained in the B publication which is, unlike in (new) Espacenet, not searched in classic Espacenet.
Kind regards
